When it comes to fine dining with a view and fresh local produce, our culinary expertise and Lakeland setting has earned an enviable reputation, including the AA Rosette for culinary excellence. Chris and his team look forward to cooking for you. Panoramic windows in the Restaurant offer captivating fell views to complement the imaginative menu. We offer a pleasing combination of traditional British dishes, using the best of local Lakeland produce, and classic French cuisine, with a light, modern interpretation. For example, our team of young passionate and talented chefs create new dishes on a regular basis, including local treats such as Fell bred Herdwick Lamb, Borrowdale Trout and fresh Game from the Holker Estate in Cartmel.
To complement the cuisine, our selection of traditional and new world wines is chosen to delight different palates and we can advise on particular wines that will suit the menu you choose.
For those who enjoy specialist wines, we offer a ’reserve’ selection featuring more exclusive wines made in smaller quantities. These ‘reserve’ wines are available to order in advance of your stay. Kindly inform us when booking whether you would like to enjoy the reserve wine list. The stock is held in temperature controlled cellars with our suppliers with only a few days’ notice prior to delivery.
The ethos of our head chef, Christopher Standhaven, and his brigade is refreshingly simple.
“Our menus reflect the diversity and quality of the Cumbrian produce available on our doorstep and we are producing some of the best dishes of my career.”
Our restaurant is open to residents and
non-residents every day for
Dinner from 6.00pm-8.30pm.
In addition, why not join us for Sunday Lunch, served from 12pm – 1.45pm in the dining room.
With training from a Michelin starred mentor, our head chef, Christopher Standhaven, takes pride in sourcing food locally where possible. Examples include game from the Cartmel valley, Herdwick lamb from Rosthwaite, as well as seafood and shellfish from Morecambe Bay. As part of the culinary experience at Borrowdale-Gates, Christopher and his team are passionate about food and work hard, not only to source high quality produce, but also with imagination so dishes and flavours do change to reflect the passing of the seasons.
Meet some of our suppliers …
Cartmel Valley Game Supplies & Smoke House
Cartmel Valley Game Supplies & Smokehouse is based in the beautiful village of Cartmel in the South Lakes where it is run by husband and wife team, Jonathan & Susan Stott. Jonathan, who is known locally as “Stotty”, established the business in 1994, processing and providing locally sourced high quality game and home smoked products.
Jonathan & Susan manage their successful game processing business from their Lakeland home, alongside their EC (4837) fully registered game plant. They work closely with their team of highly qualified and dedicated staff. All game which enters the unit is hung in temperature controlled conditions, before being inspected by HMS meat inspectors, which then goes on to be processed.
Cumbrian Fellbred, based in Milnthorpe in the South Lakes, is a local catering butcher, renowned for sourcing Cumbrian Meat direct from Cumbrian Farms over many years.
No-one quite knows what makes Cumbrian Fellbred Meat so special. It could be the limestone, sandstone or granite base for herb-rich local pastures. Perhaps, it is the traditional farming methods without chemical supplements, or maybe it is simply our clean Lakeland air. It is one of Britain’s most prized secrets and until recently, only known within the borders of Cumbria.
What is certain is that it is REAL Beef, REAL Lamb and REAL Pork, with a leaner tighter texture and a slightly darker colour described as “so delicious you can almost taste the meadow in the meat”.
Yew Tree Farm
Yew Tree Farm is in the centre of Rosthwaite, a small village in our beautiful Borrowdale Valley.
Herdwick sheep have roamed freely over the Lakeland landscape for over 1000 years and to this day enjoy a full life slowly growing on the beautiful fells of Borrowdale, where the local farmers put all their efforts into bringing their Herdwick sheep to the peak of perfection. Each young Herdwick takes longer to mature than ordinary sheep; the result is a smaller animal yielding tender, lean meat with a mature gamey flavour. The rich flavour of this tender Lakeland delicacy is definitely worth the wait, and being high in OMEGA 3, its good for you, so you can have your meat and eat it! Borrowdale Herdwick is born here, and fully traceable from fell to fork.
During your visit you can pop in for a bite to eat in their Flock In tea room or spend a day experiencing farming in the Borrowdale valley. You can even purchase a hamper of their amazing produce to take home with you.
